Welcome to the Violin and Viola Studio of Judi McDermott-Eggert. As an avid chamber and orchestral musician, Judi offers violin and viola lessons for every level of interest, advancement and age. Judi believes that music education can be an inspiration in every child’s education and has personally experienced the Suzuki philosophy that “Every Child Can!” She mentors all of her students with patience and loving support – from beginners to the most talented high school and college level students. Judi’s students have participated in Connecticut Regionals, Allstate and All-Eastern Orchestras as well as local select orchestras, solo competitions and summer festivals throughout the country.
Judi offers private violin and viola lessons in her studio, located in Guilford Connecticut. Lessons are offered in three semesters, fall, spring and summer and also individual coaching lessons. These lessons are both skillfully curriculum driven and geared to the individual goals and needs of each student. Judi combines traditional and Suzuki materials as well as, her own materials from a book she is writing that take the high level musical and technical concepts required to play the violin or viola and presents them in a way that is accessible to the younger musician. Skills are broken down into sequential procedures which both motivate the student and provide benchmarks for progress. Group and ensemble classes, master classes, concert and recital experience, community service, fun activities and supplementary classes on relevant topics all serve to reinforce and supplement skills learned in lessons, as well as build community and confidence. Among the topics covered are rhythm study, sight-reading, music theory and history, Suzuki literature review, ensemble skills, performance and audition preparation, string technique, Brain Gym, instrument care and repair, special themes such as the music of Fritz Kreisler, and preparations for community service concerts.
Most of the studio students would say that their lives have been enriched in a myriad of ways by the work that we have done together. And while many have gone on to study violin or viola on scholarship in leading universities such as Yale and Columbia University, or on to music schools such as, Oberlin, Eastman School of Music, the Hartt School of Music, , Berkelee College of Music, Boston University School of Music, The Peabody Conservatory at Johns Hopkins University and the Juilliard School. All have become life-long appreciaters of music and supporters of music education.
